Personal thoughts and key takeaways from the book Writing is Designing, by Michael J. Metts and Andy Welfle.

(How words build experiences?)

What does it mean to design something by writing?

The success of a startup product requires a wide range of factors, skills and the ability to understand users and their cultures — but there’s one skill that usually underestimates and undervalued: UX writing.

Along with the vision, constraints, interactions, visuals, and code behind it — writing plays a crucial role to communicate with your users. Writing is designing; your words are building someone’s experience.

Imagine you take any interface design and remove all words; there is not much leftover. It means you can’t create most of the interface experiences without words, and every word included in those experiences shares the users’s understanding, feeling and outcome.

Facebook — new web designFacebook-新的網(wǎng)頁設(shè)計

In user experience design, you’re not merely coming up with words to fill in the blank, you’re communicating and changing how your users think and act.

It’s a power that can only define through language, the persuasion will happen without users even knowing it’s happening.

Thinking about language means that you’re also thinking about its ethical implications-from how it could exclude people to the way it’s used to shape and influence behaviour.

Remember last time you feel someone likeable just through 5 minutes introduction? What makes you like them? Is it the tone of voice? Is it their communication skill? Did they use similar vocabularies or trendy slangs like you? All of that falls into contents, tones, and words ( of course, a touch of beauty would help too).

寫作心態(tài) (The writing mindset)

In product design, we aim to design experiences that are usable, useful and responsible. How does it apply to the words you write?

(01. Usable words)

It means people can use it without coaching or help. But writing usable words goes deeper than that. You can make writing more accessible and usable through plain language that everyone can understand with a variety of literacy levels, cultural backgrounds, and disabilities.

It’s not dumbing down, it’s opening up (Richards)

Jason Fox’s articleJason Fox的文章

“Some men just want to watch the world burn!”. Sound familiar?

Yes, if you’ve watched the Dark Knight, this warning messages bring joys to your Joker fandom. On the other hand, my mom may get a heart attack when seeing this message.

It sounds cool, hilarious and creative — but not always suitable for different user segments. Also, the original concept will be lost in translation.

(02. Useful words)

Writers need to understand well and honour the intent of your users. Let them control and prioritize their needs is what makes your words useful.

Ask yourself a few questions: Do the words represent something people want to do? Do they give people control? Does the experience add value to the user’s life?

Terms of Services put the effort in words to design an experience that’s far more useful than most of the other legal agreements. I love how they explain legal stuff in both detailed and simple forms.

“If you don’t respect them, how can you expect them to keep giving you their time, money and attention? Giving users control and prioritizing their needs is what makes writing useful.” (Michael J. Metts’s, the author). This is one of my favourite part in this book.

(03. Responsible words)

Same as design ethic, words should be used for good. As a designer, we’re responsible for the handicraft that you impact the users. Irresponsible writing may cause harm to them. One example is the practice of “confirm shaming” — where a product asks its users for something and then forces them to commit a negative statement about themselves to drop-off.

Some may find it funny, but to me, it makes your product sound like a jerk — and who want to treat customers like that?

(Content testing)

One of many test methods is printing out messages in product interfaces with some narrative to help participants understand the scenarios. There are multiple ways to ask users to evaluate. One variation is to ask users to circle what’s helpful and underline what’s unhelpful within follow-up questions.

  • Motivation: Ask for the reason on their evaluation, that will help uncover needs, missing important details or confusing terms for your users.

  • Expectation: Ask users what they expect to happen next. You’ll learn how people interpreted your words, whether it’s clear enough to be usable.

  • Perception: Ask users to rate the message verbally based on your desired outcome. For example, if you expect your product sounds casual and friendly, you could ask them to rate the content from 1 to 10 (1-professional/dry to 10-causal/friendly).

Too much confusing? Time to choose different words (Source: https://icons8.com)太混亂了嗎?

The interviews were time-consuming but always led to significant insights. For example, when researching How and when they used words like “post” and “publish”. For most users, “post” was a much more casual and less final sharing action than “publish”, which felt more formal and finished.

(In short,)

Content is king. UX writing delight user journeys through big and small touches. Nowadays, it’s easier to get a beautiful design through available libraries and free resources — but great content and user empathy are essential ingredients for a good recipe.

Practice makes perfect. Even you’re not a writer; you still can use plain language with user empathy to create good micro-copies. In Carousell, we’ve weekly UX writing challenges, where you’re given scenarios that require to send users a message and call-to-action. From this, you can learn different ways to communicate at those stress-cases.

Together with your team, your words make those moments when users interact with your product better or worse. Clear or deceitful. Useful or manipulative. It’s choices of words.

P/S: Just sit down and write more; even your sentences may not be perfect at first. As a product designer, my job requires me to write a lot. It’s not that comfortable sometimes when English is a second language, and I’m not great at literary either. But one of my friends said, “just keep writing, write as it for yourself, improvements gradually come later”.P / S:坐下來寫更多; 甚至您的句子一開始都不是完美的。
